Woke has become an incredibly divisive word yet the people who are “anti-woke” can’t even define it and don’t know the history. The phrase “stay woke” was first recorded back in 1938 by Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter and while it has stayed part of the Black American vocabulary for decades it has since been co-opted by racists.
