A utility company has warned its customers about a power outage scam. Duke Energy wrote in a social media post that people should be aware of text messages about a “scheduled rolling power outage.”

Managers of electric grids say freezing temperatures and ice and snow could lead to power outages in many places, potentially leaving millions in the dark.

Power outages can come from winter storms, heat waves, wildfires or a delivery driver backing into the power line by your house. But depending on how long they last or what the temperature is outside, they can be serious or even fatal, no matter the cause.
